What is the Dennis publications?

Dennis publishing simply put is a publishing company who publishes magazines.  They own the Week and the Week JR, they are current affair magazines, the Week is aimed at an older target audience and the Week JR is a current affairs magazine which is aimed at younger kids.

What UK magazines do Dennis publish (current affairs and others)?

PC Pro, Auto Express, Viz, MoneyWeek, Evo, Computeractive, Bizarre, Micro Mart, The Week and The Week JR.

What are their values and ideologies?

To be the most dynamic media company in the UK, you need the most agile brands.

  • Brands that stand the test of time and build their influence across every emerging platform and technology.
  • Brands that continually reach out to new customers with their ever-changing interests and passions.
  • Brands with innovation, challenge and ambition at the core of their DNA.

What similar products do they already produce and how is the target audience different?

The Week and The Week JR are similar magazines that are about current affairs, they are two magazines the JR is aimed at the young kids, and The Week is aimed at older adults, I have to design a magazine that is halfway between the two. They change the target audience by changing the design and format of the magazine, the JR is a lot simpler than The Week.

Magazine Branding design

Use geometric shapes, this is what I want the style to be for the Magazine. These shapes can be used as 'picture frames' for the original images that I have to include on the magazine. I would like to use a modern colour palette, use of a grey scale colour palette, use the negative space! (Pale orange to be used as the accent colour? Or Baby Blue?) Colours have to be Matte. I would like to use a sans serif font but I feel that the image above with the font of the masthead would work very well and would inked in my 'modern' style that I am looking to have on my magazine. So maybe use a serif font?? I want to have a minimalistic approach to the style of my magazine as I feel this is what makes magazines eye catching for 16-25 year olds, a modern looking simplistic magazine.  Magazine slogan:  By the People, For the People?? News made easier?? Excellence in Every Word?? Font: Cant decide on a font, I want a font as close to the one in the image above as I can.

Theme Ideas

Name of Magazine:           The Onlooker The Onlooker? The Observer? Reason for choosing 'The Onlooker" An Onlooker is a non-participating observer; a spectator.  Which means the magazine will have no specific side, for politics, I think that the magazine should evaluate the facts and allow the reader to decide what side they are on. The magazine should cover key issue at present, such as the BLM movement and the Covid-19 Pandemic, it should also cover news on politics, such as covering key events within parliament, Elections, big events such as Brexit and more... The style of the magazine should be modern, it should follow other themes that appeal to a 16-25 year old audience. Huck magazine is a good style, and possibly the kind of style I'd like this magazine to have. But I'd also like it to have illustrations within the magazine too, the reason why I like the style of Huck, is that they use geometric shapes as photo frames, and t...
